Detention figures – According to data issued quarterly by the Israeli Prison Service (IPS), as of 30 September 2021, there were 4,467 Palestinians (West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza) held as “security prisoners” in detention facilities including 159 children (12-17 years). In the case of children there was a 1% increase in the number compared with the previous month and an annual decrease of 8% compared with 2020. Six children were held in administrative detention. According to the IPS, 65% of child detainees were forcibly transferred and/or unlawfully detained in Israel in 2021 in violation of Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.[1] More statistics

Report: surge in solitary confinement cases - Historically, less than 4 percent of Palestinian child detainees have reported being held in solitary confinement as part of their interrogation process - or 20 to 40 children each year. A new report published today suggests that the proportion of children currently held in solitary confinement has surged to nearly 20 percent - with the trend continuing to rise. This surge equates to between 100 to 200 children each year. The report reviews 45 testimonies from children held in solitary confinement between January 2019 and May 2021. These testimonies trace the journey of the child from their homes in the West Bank to interrogation centres located in Israeli settlements in the West Bank and inside Israel. Report

A child's testimony - On 17 May 2021, a 17-year-old minor from Tulkarem was arrested by Israeli soldiers at 8:30 p.m. near a road used by settlers. He reports being held in solitary confinement for 10 days at Huwwara military base, West Bank. "After work I went to look for my brothers because at the time there were clashes with Israeli soldiers on the by-pass road.  It was around 8:30 p.m. Three soldiers suddenly ambushed me and immediately started to beat me. They pushed me to the rough ground and I cut my hands trying to protect myself. One of the soldiers continued to beat me on my back with his gun. They also swore at me." Read more
