Detention figures – According to data issued quarterly by the Israeli Prison Service (IPS), as of 31 March 2022, there were 4,241 Palestinians (West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza) held as “security prisoners” in detention facilities including 134 children (12-17 years). In the case of children there was an 8% increase in the number compared with the previous month and an annual decrease of 13% compared with 2021. Two children were held in administrative detention. According to the IPS, 67% of child detainees were transferred to prisons inside Israel in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. More statistics

US State Department's annual report on human rights - On 12 April 2022, the US State Department published its annual country report on human rights for 2021 (the Report). The Report is mandated by Congress and documents human rights conditions in nearly 200 countries and territories. Staff in US embassies around the world compile the information contained in the Report. As in previous years the Report highlights human rights violations by multiple actors in the region and considers the treatment of Palestinian children held in Israeli military detention. Read more

Israel's Other Justice System Has Rules of Its Own (Haaretz): - The entrance looks like a prison, and feels like one too. The journey begins on a narrow path, with a wall on one side and a high fence on the other. After passing through a turnstile gate, you arrive at a yard where visitors can rent a locker. You’re asked to place all your belongings inside, including your phone – everything but the clothes you’re wearing. Soon your clothes will be searched too. An employee of the Israel Prison Service lets you into the next stop, where you leave your ID card. Now you stand in front of a steel door behind which the security check awaits. Read more

A child's testimony - On 21 October 2021, a 17-year-old minor from Beit Fajjar was arrested by Israeli soldiers from home at 3:00 a.m.  He reports briefly consulting with a lawyer on the phone prior to interrogation and being informed of his right to silence. "My mother woke me up at around 3:00 a.m. to tell me that Israeli soldiers had blown off our front door and were in our house. About 10 soldiers entered and asked my father for our identity cards. Then they told my father they wanted to take me away for an hour for "a chat". They gave my father a document with details about my arrest handwritten in Hebrew." Read more
