Rome Statute enters into force on 1 April 2015
[6 January 2015] - According to the UN Treaty Collection website, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will enter into force in the State of Palestine on 1 April 2015. The Rome Statute is based on the non-retroactivity principle and the temporal jurisdiction of the Court is prospective. However, a non-party State can activate retroactive jurisdiction of the Court by depositing a declaration with the Registrar of the Court pursuant to Article 12(3) of the Statute. Media reports indicate that the State of Palestine did lodge such a declaration prior to signing the Statute extending the Court's jurisdiction back to investigating alleged war crimes "committed in Palestine" since 13 June 2014.
